As time went by, her brother's advisors wished to have more power and control over the country. This led to actions that resulted in Cleopatra having to flee the country for her life in 49 B.C. While in exile, she began to raise a mercenary army that she would lead into battle against her brother in a civil war that would not come to an end until involvement from Rome.

Her brother tried to forge alliances with the Roman Republic when Julius Caesar arrived in Alexandria to look for one of his commanders, Pompey, who had been the victim of an ill-conceived assassination. This, however, turned out to backfire on him. Cleopatra, hearing of Caesar's presence had herself smuggled into the royal palace where she was able to charm Caesar and solidify her aims at the throne.
